Types of work undertaken

  • Collecting and recording revenue received by the Government; maintaining and updating records of revenue; maintaining and updating loans borrowed from international, multilateral and bilateral agencies and countries; issuing and maintaining all the relevant treasury loan accounts of the GoM.
  • Maintaining revenue and expenditure data and records of the GoM and preparing the Annual National Budget.
  • Forecasting the financial positions and budgets of public limited companies and public enterprises; monitoring Government capital invested in these companies; monitoring annual profits and financial stability; policy making; formulating actions to be taken against non-profitable companies/public enterprises and advising the President's Office of the necessary actions that need to be taken against such enterprises.
  • Studying and monitoring changes to the economy; advising the relevant authorities on the changes that need to be brought to the economic framework of the country and to take the necessary steps to implement such changes, in collaboration with these Government agencies.
  • Carrying out activities in association with international, financial, multilateral and economic institutions.
  • Evaluating loan proposals received from various Government agencies; formulating policies with regard to obtaining such loans; determining the loan amount(s) to be taken and negotiating with international, financial, multilateral and economic institutions with regard to borrowing.
  • Liaising with foreign financial institutions with regard to obtaining funds for National Development projects requiring foreign loans.
  • Managing external debt accounts and technical assistance received by the GoM.
  • Managing and monitoring the activities of local private parties who obtain loans from foreign financial institutions, through the Government.
  • Identifying and evaluating the impact of Government borrowing and the debt service ratio on the economy.
  • Monitoring Government property and carrying out activities with regard to the management of valuable objects. These include items found adrift at sea or washed onto the shores of the Maldives, as well as items of historical value found during land excavations in the Maldives.
  • Managing Pensions, welfare allowances and the Provident Fund.
  • Managing all activities mandated to the MoFT by the constitution of the Republic of Maldives.
