The UNFPA Country Director, Mr. Alan Sibernaler paid a courtesy call to Minister of Finance & Treasury, His Excellency, Mr. Ahmed Munawar on 12th July 2016, at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury.

The UNFPA country Director was accompanied by senior officials from the National Bureau of Statistics and  Professor John May, who had authored and collaborated for the launch of report ‘Maldives’ Population Dynamics: Policy Prospects for Human Growth and Opportunity’ to mark the World’s Population Day.

During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the need for good scientific research/ evidence in evidence based planning, as well as the need for a combined effort for long term visions with short term perspectives in education, health and gender equality. Professor John May also expressed his concern on capturing the demographic window of opportunity.

The meeting concluded with UNFPA reassurance of their continued support to National Bureau of Statistics in strengthening research and developing policy oriented papers based on Census 2014.
