Agence Française de Développement (AFD) was established in 1941 as a public financial institution that implements the policies defined by the French Government. AFD works to fight poverty and promote sustainable development.
AFD played a vital role in the rehabilitation of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami affected islands. They provided assistance for reconstruction of harbors and construction of sewerage networks in some of these islands.
